Methane as Green House Gas is more harmful than CO2
Why is flaring a source of Methane?
110 countries commit to reducing global methane - emissions by at least 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030 and moving towards using best available inventory methodologies to quantify methane emissions, with a particular focus on high emission sources.
Why is flaring a source of Methane?
Flares do not completely combust all the hydrocarbons in the gas stream. As a result, methane emissions are emitted from flaring operations.
Flare destruction efficiency is assumed to be 98%, therefore 2% methane is released uncombusted.
Under these assumptions, the World Bank estimates that 2021 flaring resulte in 400 million tonnes of CO, equivalent emissions.
