Despite the importance of livestock production in Sub-Saharan Africa, the issue of yield gaps among either livestock or mixed crop–livestock smallholders in this region is severely under-researched, as previous yield studies have focused on crops. This study addresses an important gap in the literature by estimating yield gaps for both crops and livestock in these production systems. Moreover, by considering the expansion of outputs for given levels of production inputs for each farm, the production improvements identified in this study can be assured of increasing total factor productivity without the risk of inadvertently making farmers economically worse off.
