Energy Savings for Offshore Drilling Units Using LEDs

Nowadays, new technologies are coming to the fore in the illumination field; in particular, LED technology is now beginning to spread in the world of lighting.
The advantages of LED technology, such as compactness, high mechanical strength, high efficiency and a long cycle-life are well-known in the field of industrial/residential areas, but a little less for applications in classified areas (Ex).
It is better to specify that the use of new LED technology is more expensive than conventional lighting sources. Nevertheless, this initial disadvantage is offset by several technical advantages, in particular for Ex environment, such as: low power consumption and a very long operational life-cycle. The purpose of this article is to evaluate and illustrate the energy savings on an offshore platform using LED equipment.
